イノベーティブなテクノロジーは社会課題を解決するポテンシャルを秘めています。つくば市には150の研究機関と2万人を超える研究者が日々社会課題の解決に向けて研究し、そこから生まれるスタートアップも近年増加しています。そのつくば市は2022年12月にルクセンブルクの政府系機関であるLUXINNOVATIONとスタートアップ支援に関するMoCを締結しました。

ルクセンブルクは欧州の中心に位置し、国際的かつオープンなビジネス拠点として知られており、政府は研究開発とイノベーションを奨励し、フィンテックや宇宙などディープテックを中心に550社以上のスタートアップが集う魅力的なスタートアップエコシステムが形成されています。日本から進出した宇宙スタートアップispaceはルクセンブルクで月面探査ローバーを開発中であり、また革新的断熱材を開発するつくば発のスタートアップ企業Thermalyticaは、ルクセンブルク政府提供アクセラレーションプログラムに日本のスタートアップ企業として初採択され、今年1月から現地で欧州展開に取り組んでいます。
昨年度、両者はJETRO茨城と協力し、様々な交流を行いました。つくば・東京圏のスタートアップをルクセンブルク現地に派遣し、メンタリングやネットワーキングを実施したほか、ルクセンブルクのテック企業をつくば・東京に招いてつくばの研究機関や筑波大との交流を深めました。

今回、ルクセンブルクの経済使節団がつくばに来訪する事となり「Tsukuba x Luxembourg Startup Night 2024」と題したピッチイベントを開催します。Thermalyticaによるルクセンブルクでの活動の様子や、両国の新進気鋭のディープテック・イノベーター計8社がショートピッチを披露します。皆様のご参加をお待ちしています！

Innovative technologies have the potential to solve global social issues. Tsukuba City has 150 research institutes and over 20,000 researchers working daily to solve social issues, and the number of startups born from this research has been increasing in recent years. In December 2022, Tsukuba City signed an MoC with LUXINNOVATION, a Luxembourg government-affiliated organization, to support startups. Luxembourg is located in the heart of Europe and is known as an international and open business hub, where the government encourages R&D and innovation, creating an attractive startup ecosystem of more than 550 startups, mainly in deep tech such as fintech and space. Japanese space startup ispace is developing a lunar rover in Luxembourg. Thermalytica, a Tsukuba-based startup developing innovative insulation materials, was the first Japanese startup to be selected for an acceleration program offered by the Luxembourg government, and has been working on European expansion since January this year.

Last year, the two companies cooperated with JETRO Ibaraki and engaged in various exchanges. Startups from the Tsukuba/Tokyo area were sent to Luxembourg for mentoring and networking, and Luxembourg tech companies were invited to Tsukuba/Tokyo to deepen exchanges with Tsukuba’s research institutions and Tsukuba University.

Now that the Luxembourg economic delegation will be visiting Tsukuba, a pitch event titled “Tsukuba x Luxembourg Startup Night 2024” will be held, featuring a presentation by Thermalytica on its activities in Luxembourg and a total of 8 up-and-coming deep-tech innovators from both countries. We look forward to seeing you there!

Rafinex develops an AI-assisted stochastic topology optimization for safe, lightweight designs. This technology actively manages uncertainty and risks of real-life variability to create uniquely robust designs that remain safe even in off-design load conditions. Anticipating variability effects makes designs more resilient, safe and durable because they do not exhibit stress hot spots when deployed and tend to have better frequency properties. Rafinex’ next-generation algorithms aim to solve product designs for various manufacturing strategies including casting, injection moulding, AM as well as fibre directions in composites. Sector applications range from automotive, aerospace, space, over tooling and heavy machinery to defence.

Virtual Rangers is a creative studio based in Luxembourg, specializing in Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) technologies. Founded in 2017, the company is dedicated to transforming user experiences across various sectors, including education, healthcare, and entertainment, through immersive and interactive solutions. With a focus on innovation, storytelling, and gamification, Virtual Rangers designs and develops custom VR and AR applications that engage, educate, and entertain, setting new standards in immersive technology. ・Warpspace
Warpspace is a startup located in Tsukuba City, Ibaraki. Warpspace has been developing “WarpHub InterSat”, the world’s first commercial optical communication network in space, which solves the problem of satellites not being able to immediately transmit large amounts of data to the ground. By enabling real-time Earth observation, the network will contribute to improving the efficiency of emergency disaster relief, improving systems, and streamlining logistics.

We are a University of Tsukuba startup developing production technology for aromatic biochemicals from renewable biomass. Our strength is the integrated development of smart cells (improved microorganisms) and production processes, and the ability to develop technologies that can be used in the field.

Orbspace is a Tsukuba, Japan-based startup developing a small suborbital rocket called Infinity. The rocket is ultra-reusable and mass-produced, and its high flight frequency will enable new dimensions of safety, operational reliability, and low cost. Highly modular, Infinity is designed for multiple market applications, including space travel, real-time on-demand imagery and tracking, and space debris removal. Low cost in particular is key to solving the space debris crisis.
